Doctoral Counseling Psychology Intern

Thank you for considering an internship with Chosen, PLLC. We are excited about the opportunity to support counseling psychology doctoral students with professional development and training.

Below is a general description of the experience and what you can expect. That said, there is room to make it what you want within what we can support, as we have capacity. While having a foundation, this experience is also collaborative.

Who Is It For:

This internship is for students who are finishing or have completed coursework and still need to go out on their APPIC pre-doctoral internship. This is not an APPIC pre-doctoral internship. This internship can be separate from or in conjunction with a field experience for course credit.

Professional Development Focus:

The doctoral internship at Chosen, PLLC is designed to support the learning and development of third-year and beyond doctoral students in counseling psychology. The knowledge and experience of Dr. Leatrice Brooks, LP, and Team Chosen will provide expertise and insight into the day-to-day work of mental health service provision in a private practice setting, as well as organizational leadership.

This internship builds higher-level thinking and skills, self-awareness, and professional identity. As available, there may be opportunities to accompany and assist Dr. Brooks with professional speaking engagements and executive coaching as part of The Power in Presence brand. There may also be other community engagement experiences. As Dr. Brooks identifies, there is also a focus on understanding and growth in BIPOC leadership.

Availability:

Students with a valid DTLLP can see clients in the office on any working day. With a few predictable exceptions, Dr. Brooks is available to be in the office on Wednesdays (9:00am-6:00pm) and Thursdays (9:00am-7:00pm). An unlicensed student intern will need to see clients on those two days during those times.

Activities:

  • Individual counseling (intakes and follow-up appointments) – 5 weekly minimum with ramp-up based on capacity
    • Scheduling, progress notes, case conceptualization
    • Hybrid: In-person and telehealth
  • Weekly individual supervision with Dr. Brooks as per licensing board requirements
  • Leadership, speaking, and executive coaching shadowing and assisting with Dr. Brooks
  • Team meeting (when able to attend per academic schedule)
  • Team relationship building
  • Professional development and networking events
  • Social invitations to get to know the team and Kalamazoo
  • End of internship reflection presentation/discussion with the team

This field experience is a minimum of a 7-12 month commitment. Interns will work directly with Dr. Brooks to identify goals and desired outcomes.

Compensation:

Interns will be paid 25 percent of billable service hours for services. Interns will primarily see clients with Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. Supervision is included in the percentage.
